Published January 10, 2026 • 4 min read

Medicare Open Enrollment runs from October 15 to December 7 each year. During this time, you can make changes to your Medicare coverage. Use this checklist to make sure you're prepared.

Important Deadline: All changes must be made by December 7, 2026. Coverage changes take effect January 1, 2027.

Before Open Enrollment Starts

Review your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) from your current plan
Make a list of all your current medications and dosages
Note any new health conditions or upcoming procedures
Identify your preferred doctors and verify they accept Medicare
Calculate your expected healthcare costs for next year

During Open Enrollment

Compare plans using Medicare.gov's Plan Finder tool
Check if your medications are covered under each plan's formulary
Verify your doctors are in-network for plans you're considering
Compare monthly premiums, deductibles, and out-of-pocket maximums
Look for extra benefits like dental, vision, and hearing coverage
Pro Tip: Don't just look at premiums! A plan with a lower premium might have higher copays or a smaller network.
