Balancing Relaxation with Hobbies
Rest is well-earned — but so is purpose. Here’s how to enjoy downtime while keeping your mind and hands happily busy.
Rest without the guilt
You spent a lifetime working. Slow mornings, a good book, an afternoon nap — these are part of a healthy retirement, not laziness. Give yourself permission to truly rest.
Rediscover (or discover) a hobby
Hobbies give your days meaning and keep your brain sharp. Gardening, painting, woodworking, cooking, music, fishing, learning a language — pick something that excites you. It’s never too late to start something new.
Find your balance
Aim for a mix: some days lean into relaxation, others into a project or class. If you find yourself bored or restless, that’s a signal to add a little more activity. If you feel frazzled, scale back. You get to decide.
